Spring Forward: Warmer Weather Invigorates Activity on the Grand Riverfront

Spring brings vibrant energy to the Grand Rapids Riverfront, where outdoor dining, kayaking, and scenic riverwalks attract locals and visitors alike.

There’s a moment every spring when Grand Rapids just feels different. The snow has finally melted, the sun shines brighter, and the days are warmer. Restaurants start setting up outdoor seating, public events fill the calendar, and greenspaces come alive. Along the Grand River, this feeling brings new life to the riverwalk.

The Riverwalk Reawakens

As the first warmer weekends arrive, the riverwalk quickly becomes a bustling destination once again. Joggers, dog-walkers, and families return to the paved paths, public spaces, and parks, enjoying the timeless river views that feel brand new. Popular spots like Ah-Nab-Awen Park, Lyon Square, and Sixth Street Park feel as if they’re being rediscovered every spring.

All along the river, bikers, walkers, and runners utilize an interconnected series of trails, streets, and well-worn routes to get around the city. Whether you’re commuting from the Westside or cruising in from the Southeast, the Riverfront is quickly becoming a central thread in the city’s mobility network.

First Paddles of the Season

Before the summer rush, April brings a peacefulness to the Grand River, perfect for a solo kayak trip or a quiet paddle with a friend. Local outfitters are opening up shop, and weekend adventurers are eager to launch into the river’s gentle spring currents.

Whether you're launching near the 6th Street Bridge, below Fish Ladder Park, or at one of many other sites, the city is actively enhancing kayaking accessibility on the Grand River. Additions like the EZ Launch at Riverside Park are making it easier to get on the water. Future access points and improved landings also are in the works  as part of Grand Rapids WhiteWater's broader plan to restore the river's natural flow and recreational potential.

Patios, Plazas, and Outdoor Dining Comebacks

There’s nothing quite like that first patio lunch or happy hour of the season, made especially delightful by the sounds of the river nearby. As soon as temperatures inch past 55 degrees, outdoor dining returns in full force, with tables rolled out, umbrellas popped up, and sidewalks filled with chatter.

Riverside establishments set the stage for spring, with seasonal menus, extended hours, and fresh views. Whether it’s a picnic by the water, dinner on a patio, or late-night drink with skyline views, the Riverfront offers endless ways to dine outdoors.

Rosa Parks Circle Sizzles

Just a couple blocks from the river, nestled in the heart of downtown, Rosa Parks Circle transforms into a vibrant hub with the arrival of spring. While it serves as an ice rink during the winter months, this beloved community spot becomes a bustling center of social activity as the weather warms up. Every May, the popular lunchtime series, Relax at Rosa, comes alive with food trucks, outdoor tables, and live music drifting through the streets.

It’s a great spot to stop during a walk along the river or to take a midday break from work. You’ll find everything from tacos to Thai, with local musicians setting the tone as spring awakens the city.

This is Just the Beginning

Each year, spring breathes new life into the city, invigorating the Riverfront. With plans for new green spaces, expanded trail connections, and even more community events, the vibrancy along the Riverfront continues to grow. The sounds of paddles in the water, music echoing through Rose Parks Circle, and the pitter-patter of footsteps along the paved paths all serve as reminders of a riverfront that is thriving and expanding.
